Step Two: "Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity."
This is one of the first areas which requires trust from the sex addict. We now know that there is one that is greater than ourselves. This is the best news we have in recovery, that we don't have to figure this out alone. As you begin to trust this power, you begin to recover from the sick patterns, poor choices, and undesirable relationships that have been so much a part of your past.
In the original context of AA, this power greater than ourselves indicated that the power was greater than that first group of recovering alcoholics. This one single power was greater than a whole group. That's a lot of power. People in recovery frequently first recognize this power in the group, but in reality it is greater than the group. Even if you had a power greater than yourself, you may have had difficulty accessing the resources of that power and applying them to your life. In the program, you come to believe that this power has more ability to solve life's problems than you do individually. What a relief!
