Hi, I’m Dr. Doug Weiss. Thank you for joining me as we address an issue that impacts both men and women: lust. For many, it feels like an impossible battle, but the good news is this—Jesus Christ offers real freedom. Today, I want to help you understand the nature of lust and how, through God’s Word and His Spirit, you can walk in victory.
Living in a Culture of Temptation
We live in one of the most sexualized times in history. Temptation is everywhere—on television, social media, magazines, and right on the phones in our pockets. Many young men are raised in a culture that normalizes lust, while entire generations of husbands grew up in a world that embraced pornography.
But the Bible warns us clearly:
“For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh…” (Galatians 5:17)
Lust isn’t just “out there.” It begins in the human heart. And unless we learn how to walk in the Spirit, lust can quietly consume us and pull us away from intimacy with God.
What Lust Really Does
To lust after someone, you must remove the truth of who they are. A woman is not just an image—she is a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and most importantly, a child of the Most High God. Lust strips away her God-given soul, spirit, intelligence, and emotions, reducing her to a one-dimensional object.
But Jesus shows us a different way. When a prostitute came to Him and washed His feet with her hair (Luke 7:36–50), He didn’t view her through a lustful lens. He saw her heart. He saw her as a soul in need of forgiveness and love. That’s the model for us.
Why So Many Stay Trapped
If Christ has set us free, why do so many still feel stuck? Scripture gives us a clue:
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” (Hosea 4:6)
Too often, the church doesn’t talk openly about lust, leaving believers unequipped to fight. Without wisdom and accountability, many men (and women) remain bound. But Jesus declared:
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36)
This freedom is real. You don’t have to live in defeat.
Weapons for the Battle
Breaking free from lust isn’t about willpower alone—it’s about using the weapons God has given us.
-
Renew Your Mind
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…” (Romans 12:2)
Replace lustful thoughts with God’s truth. Train your mind to see people as brothers and sisters, not objects. -
Walk in the Spirit
“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16)
Freedom comes as you daily choose the Spirit over the flesh. -
Pursue Accountability
James 5:16 reminds us to “confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” Walking with brothers in Christ provides strength, encouragement, and celebration of victories. -
Guard Your Heart
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23)
Be intentional about what you allow into your mind and spirit.
Freedom Is Possible
For nearly 40 years, I’ve counseled men trapped in lust, pornography, and infidelity—and I’ve seen countless lives transformed. With the Spirit of the Lord, there is freedom (2 Corinthians 3:17).
Imagine walking through a mall, scrolling on your phone, or sitting in church without lustful thoughts clouding your mind. That’s not just wishful thinking—that’s the power of Christ at work in you.
Lust-free living isn’t only possible, it’s God’s desire for His children. And when you believe that truth, everything changes.
👉 Reflection Question:
Where in your life do you need to surrender lustful thoughts to Jesus? Take time to pray and ask Him to renew your mind today.
