Attitude Check Series - #1- Responsible

Recently, we went out to a restaurant with our children and a couple of their college friends. The waitress was great. She stayed on top of refilling drinks and she got the order right for all six of us—exactly as we asked—without having written it down. We all talked about how good the service was as we left. In another example, Lisa and I went out to a local restaurant after work one night. The waiter was so friendly to both of us and so competent, we went back again just because of the service we received. The attitude in which service is given has a significant impact on those being served.

When Jesus washed His disciples’ feet, could you imagine Him saying: “Boys, line up! I have to splash water on your disgusting feet to make a point. I am doing this only because my Father wants me to do it. Hurry! Let’s get this done.” In the Bible, not once do you see Jesus serving with a bad attitude. I think this is because He embraced His calling to serve humanity (as we explored earlier). Out of His acceptance, He had a good attitude in serving us humans.

Honestoy assess the attitudes you have had in the past—even the attitudes you have right now—when you say out loud, “I am a servant to my spouse.” The emotions you experience when you make this confession will tell you where you are. If you still have strong emotions resistant to your confession of being a servant.

As we walk through these various attitudes in this series, I want you to know each attitude is normal, and any attitude can change as the heart embraces its calling from God to serve your spouse. So do not feel bad if you identify an attitude you do not like about yourself; it can change into a wonderful attitude over time.

Also note that as believers in Christ Jesus, we are 100 percent responsible for our own attitudes. We definitely do not want to blame anyone, including our spouses, for the current attitude we have or past attitude we had about being a servant.
