Your spouse greatly benefits when you make spiritual connection a priority in your marriage, especially through praying together. Regardless of whether prayer comes naturally to you or fits your personality, intentionally pursuing spiritual intimacy is an important responsibility and opportunity within marriage. It is not about being the most spiritual person or knowing exactly what to say. It is about making the effort to connect with your spouse and with God.
When you pray together daily or regularly, you invite God into the center of your relationship. I believe that God, our heavenly Father and, in a sense, our Father-in-Law in marriage, delights in spending time with both of you together, just as He values His individual relationship with each of you. He created this beautiful threefold relationship within marriage so that you could experience fellowship and communion with Him, both individually and as husband and wife.
Marriage is not simply about two people maintaining separate spiritual lives. It is also about growing together in faith, seeking God's wisdom, and allowing Him to strengthen your relationship. Your spiritual walk should include intentional moments when you come together before the Lord, supporting and encouraging one another in your relationship with Him.
Beyond praying together, there are many meaningful ways to develop spiritual intimacy. Some couples enjoy reading the Bible together, which can be a wonderful opportunity for connection and growth. When Lisa and I read Scripture together, we intentionally focus on sharing what God is teaching each of us personally. We do not use that time to point out what we believe the other person needs to learn, change, or apply. Instead, we approach it with humility, allowing God's Word to speak to our own hearts while encouraging one another along the way.
This distinction is important. Spiritual intimacy should never become an opportunity to criticize, correct, or spiritually control your spouse. It should be a time of encouragement, vulnerability, mutual respect, and shared growth in your relationship with God.
Other couples may choose to worship together, listen to worship music, read daily devotionals, or spend time discussing what God is doing in their lives. There is no single formula for developing spiritual intimacy. What matters most is creating intentional opportunities to connect with God and one another.
Spending spiritual time together is also a beautiful way to demonstrate a servant's heart toward your spouse. When you willingly invest in their spiritual well-being, listen to their heart, pray for their needs, and encourage their relationship with the Lord, you communicate love, honor, and commitment in a meaningful way.
Consistency is one of the most important elements of building spiritual intimacy in marriage. It does not have to be complicated, lengthy, or perfectly structured. Even a few minutes of sincere prayer, reading Scripture, or sharing what God has placed on your heart can strengthen your spiritual connection over time.
The goal is not to check another activity off your daily list but to cultivate a marriage where God is welcomed, sought after, and honored together. As you consistently make room for Him in your relationship, you create opportunities for greater unity, understanding, emotional closeness, and spiritual growth.
A marriage rooted in spiritual intimacy allows both spouses to experience the blessing of walking with God individually while also growing closer to Him together.
