Overcoming an addiction can be one of the hardest, but most life-changing things someone can do in life. The grip of addiction is real, and so are the principles for healing. Here are some general points on overcoming any addiction.
- You have to be honest that you have a problem.
- You have to be willing to take full responsibility for the problem. (I tell my clients, “When you’re the problem, you’re the solution.”)
- Educate yourself about your particular addictions.
- Get into a Twelve Step support group or addiction recovery group specific to your issue.
- Call someone from that group every day for at least ninety days.
- Get a sponsor in the group.
- Get professional help if you are failing.
- Focus on the positive you are fighting for.
